Hello! Keeper of the Light in 7.41f is once again a hero I’d keep an eye on not just because of his familiar support role, but because of how they’re gradually trimming away the things that make him comfortable to play. He has always lived off tempo, mana, and good map positioning, and now those exact things have become a little harder to use well.
Role and abilities
Keeper of the Light is an Intelligence, ranged hero with a difficulty rating of 2 out of 3. In terms of role, he is first and foremost a Support, then a Nuker and Disabler. In short, this is a support who doesn’t just hand out resources, but also helps the team keep pace through healing, control, and map pressure.
Officially, he is described as a hero useful to any team: he manipulates the mana of enemies and allies, strikes with waves of light, and leads his comrades into the attack. In practice, this is exactly the kind of hero whose strength depends heavily on timing: when to spend resources, when to break positioning, and when to simply give the team one extra move.
- Illuminate — a channeled wave of light that builds up before release, deals damage, and reveals the fog of war.
- Blinding Light — an area burst that pushes enemies to the edges and blinds them.
- Chakra Magic — restores mana and reduces the cooldown of basic abilities on a cooldown.
- Solar Bind — reduces the target’s magic resistance and slows it more if it moves more.
- Will-O-Wisp — granted by Aghanim’s Scepter, creates a wandering flame that hypnotizes nearby enemies.
- Spirit Form — transforms the hero into a being of pure light, increases spell range, and boosts the bonus movement speed from Bright Speed; in this form, Illuminate heals allies.
- Bright Speed — innate ability: grants movement speed based on Intelligence, and also leaves a trail of light behind him that provides vision.
Changes in recent patches
In recent versions, the hero has been changed in exactly the areas that make him feel smooth to play: mobility, mana sustain, and the value of his form. To me, this looks like a very telling series of small but irritating tweaks for anyone who likes support rhythm.
- 7.41f — base attack speed reduced from 100 to 90; Chakra Magic cooldown reduction weakened from 3/4/5/6 to 2.5/3.5/4.5/5.5 seconds; healing from Illuminate in Spirit Form reduced from 70% to 60%; healing from Aghanim’s Shard remains 100%.
- 7.41e — Chakra Magic cooldown increased from 19/16/13/10 to 20/17/14/11 seconds; Solar Bind cast range reduced from 850 to 750.
- 7.41c — base movement speed reduced from 315 to 310.
- 7.41b — Bright Speed became slower to stack: 1 speed per 3 Intelligence instead of 2.5; spell range bonus in Spirit Form reduced; level 15 talent for bonus movement speed from Bright Speed in Spirit Form weakened from 30% to 25%.
- 7.41 — base movement speed reduced from 320 to 315; Special Reserve removed; Bright Speed added; Chakra Magic changed its cooldown and mana restoration; Blinding Light gained cast range and a new knockback mechanic; Spirit Form no longer grants percentage movement speed, but amplifies the bonus from Bright Speed; talents were significantly reworked around the hero’s new style.
Statistics
According to OpenDota, Keeper of the Light was played 204,815 times in public matches over the last 7 days. His win rate is 48.8%, which puts him 85th out of 127 heroes by win rate and 73rd by number of games. In other words, this is far from a rare hero, but he also doesn’t look like a stable statistical favorite. The numbers suggest a solid workhorse option rather than the kind of support people are scared of before the game even starts.
- Herald — 45.8%
- Guardian — 47.7%
- Crusader — 48.0%
- Archon — 48.5%
- Legend — 49.3%
- Ancient — 49.9%
- Divine — 51.3%
In professional matches over the latest period, the hero has 3 picks, 3 wins, and 18 bans. He looks like a niche but still respected tool: not a mass-pick hero, but clearly one teams still remember to ban.
Items and counters
As for items, his build is very much what you’d expect from a support that wants to stay alive, move around, and press buttons. There’s nothing exotic here, and that’s perfectly normal.
- Starting: Iron Branch, Tango, Circlet, Faerie Fire, Observer and Sentry Wards, Blood Grenade.
- Early game: Boots of Speed, Urn of Shadows, Diadem, Spirit Vessel, Tranquil Boots, Boots of Travel.
- Mid game: Staff of Wizardry, Force Staff, Holy Locket, Point Booster, Boots of Travel, Vitality Booster.
- Late game: Mystic Staff, Scythe of Vyse, Aghanim’s Scepter, Octarine Core, Black King Bar, Soul Booster.
In terms of matchups, he has a few notable splits in professional games. Against some heroes, he feels very comfortable; against others, not so much. I think that fits his nature well: this is a hero who likes space and order on the map, not close-range chaos.
- Best against: Witch Doctor — 23 games, 73.9% win rate; Magnus — 22 games, 72.7% win rate; Legion Commander — 23 games, 69.6% win rate.
- Worst against: Chen — 24 games, 37.5% win rate; Treant Protector — 71 games, 38.0% win rate; Venomancer — 39 games, 41.0% win rate.
Conclusion
Keeper of the Light in 7.41f looks like a hero being gently squeezed on comfort, but not broken. He gets a little less value out of repeated button presses, a little less healing, and a little less freedom of movement, which means good timing and positioning matter even more. By pub numbers, he doesn’t look like a hero currently crushing everyone, but he’s far from dead: in the hands of a player who understands when mana is more useful, when control matters more, and when to save someone, KotL still remains a very annoying support.

that 60% heal in spirit form is the part i dont like most. kotl was always about keeping the lane moving, and every small cut like this makes him feel less smooth even if the hero is still playable. not dead, just more awkward now, which matters for a 5.
Awkward is enough
yeah, but only if the game already lets him do that. if your cores are behind, kotl still ends up looking like a guy pressing buttons from fog and hoping nobody jumps him.
speed nerf after speed nerf, nice
Chakra Magic
lost a lane to chakra spam once
+ happens fast too, one extra cast and suddenly your whole lane feels off
classic support tax
yeah, and it always lands on the heroes that need clean spacing the most. still hurts when the lane turns into a mana refill contest and then you remember your own creep wave is gone.
Чакра маны теперь жмет?
KotL keeps getting trimmed like a budget haircut and somehow still walks into lane with a flashlight. The funny part is people keep calling him annoying even after the nerfs, so the hero is basically living on pure vibes and old habits at this point. a little less heal, a little less speed, still ready to ruin your lane)))
