Hi! Today I’m looking at Slardar in patch 7.41f — a hero that is simple in concept, but very demanding when it comes to tempo. He’s still about chasing, armor, control, and short fights, and in the current changes I’m more interested not in the fact that he was nerfed, but in how carefully the exact parts of his kit that make him comfortable in pubs were trimmed.
Role and abilities
By description and role, Slardar is a melee strength hero focused on pressure, initiation, and finishing off a target after the first contact. There’s no complicated mechanic for the sake of complexity: he just jumps into a fight quickly, ruins the opponent’s positioning, and doesn’t let them get away cleanly.
- Guardian Sprint helps him close the gap quickly and move through units.
- Slithereen Crush gives local control with damage and a slow after the stun; with Aghanim’s Scepter it gets wider and lasts longer, and with Aghanim’s Shard it also applies Corrosive Haze.
- Bash of the Deep is part of his basic close-range plan, which keeps Slardar dangerous even without a long setup.
- Seaborn Sentinel strengthens the hero in the river, in the pool, or on a water trail: it grants movement speed, health regeneration, armor, and attack damage; with Aghanim’s Scepter, the survivability bonus becomes stronger.
- Corrosive Haze reduces physical damage resistance, reveals invisibility, and grants vision of the target, leaving a water trail behind them.
I like that almost every tool in the hero’s kit serves the same idea: catch, reveal, hold, and quickly turn the fight into a favorable trade. But in pub terms, he’s also a hero who depends a lot on whether his team is ready to fight with him, rather than just watch him run after someone alone across the map.
Changes in recent patches
- 7.41f: base health regeneration reduced by 0.25; Slithereen Crush damage reduced from 75/150/225/300 to 60/140/220/300.
- 7.41d: armor reduction from Corrosive Haze was weakened from 10/15/20 to 8/14/20.
- 7.41c: Slithereen Crush cooldown increased from 7 to 8.5/8/7.5/7 seconds.
- 7.41b: Guardian Sprint cooldown increased from 29/25/21/17 to 33/28/23/18 seconds.
- 7.41: Seaborn Sentinel no longer upgrades with Corrosive Haze; the base bonuses to health regeneration and armor were changed, the attack damage bonus was converted into a percentage form, and the Aghanim’s Scepter values were also trimmed. Guardian Sprint gained slow resistance for the first 2.5 seconds, which then gradually fades. The talents were reworked too: at level 10, the bonus to Seaborn Sentinel damage was replaced with damage for Bash of the Deep; at level 15, Bash of the Deep damage was replaced with armor reduction from Corrosive Haze; at level 20, armor reduction was replaced with bonus damage from Seaborn Sentinel.
To me, this chain of changes looks like an attempt to slightly cut back on his overly reliable versatility. Slardar still remains a hero that loves tempo and physical damage, but now it’s harder for him to accelerate and to stand his ground in long, drawn-out fights without noticeable support from his team or items.
Statistics
According to OpenDota, over the last 7 days Slardar was played in 291,521 public matches, and his win rate was 49.4%. That puts him 68th out of 127 heroes by win rate and 53rd by number of games.
- Herald — 51.2%
- Guardian — 50.5%
- Crusader — 50.1%
- Archon — 49.6%
- Legend — 49.1%
- Ancient — 48.1%
- Divine — 47.5%
In professional matches, according to OpenDota over the latest period, Slardar was picked 4 times, won 2 of those games, and was banned 1 time. The sample size is very small, so I’d be careful with conclusions here: it’s more a sign that the hero is present in drafts than that he is directly shaping the meta.
Items and matchups
From OpenDota’s pro-match data, Slardar has a familiar item pattern: he wants to get mobility quickly, then either lock himself into the fight or amplify physical pressure.
- Starting out: Iron Branch, Gauntlets of Strength, Tango, Circlet, Faerie Fire, Observer Ward.
- Early game: Boots of Speed, Power Treads, Bracer, Soul Ring, Bottle, Chainmail.
- Mid game: Blink Dagger, Ogre Axe, Aghanim’s Shard, Mithril Hammer, Black King Bar, Broadsword.
- Late game: Sacred Relic, Black King Bar, Nullifier, Aghanim’s Scepter, Hyperstone, Assault Cuirass.
The matchup picture is pretty typical too: Slardar looks better against heroes he can find quickly and pressure with physical damage, and worse against those who slip into chaos, tempo, and awkward positioning.
- Best against: Outworld Destroyer — 24 games, 70.8% win rate; Anti-Mage — 28 games, 67.9%; Oracle — 29 games, 62.1%.
- Worst against: Mirana — 67 games, 32.8% win rate; Bounty Hunter — 41 games, 34.1%; Dark Seer — 54 games, 37.0%.
Conclusion
It seems to me that in 7.41f, Slardar remains a clear and honest hero: he can still start fights, find a target, and make them vulnerable to physical damage. But the latest tweaks carefully lower his comfort — less damage from Slithereen Crush, a weaker armor-breaking profile, and a slightly rougher early-game tempo. In pubs, that usually means one thing: the hero doesn’t disappear, but he demands a bit more thoughtful play and won’t forgive unnecessary pauses. I’d expect him to remain a solid choice for players who like to play off initiation and a straightforward fight plan, only now that plan will need to be executed a little more carefully.

That Crush damage cut hurts
У мене він один раз злетів жорстко))
Хто вже ганяв його з бкб рано?
Та питання не в бкб, а в таймінгу
blink bkb ac and go
base. if the game reaches that point, he is still a menace and nobody wants to walk uphill into him.
