Winter Wyvern in 7.41f: Arctic Burn and Cold Embrace After the Nerfs

Winter Wyvern in 7.41f: Arctic Burn and Cold Embrace After the Nerfs

Hello! Today I’m looking at Winter Wyvern in patch 7.41f, because right now the hero has once again had some of its most noticeable buttons adjusted. In my view, this is one of those cases where small changes clearly show the overall direction: the hero isn’t being broken, but the strongest sources of pressure are being carefully trimmed back.

Role and abilities

Winter Wyvern is an Intelligence, ranged hero with a difficulty rating of 2 out of 3. In terms of roles, it leans most heavily toward Support, then Disabler and Nuker. I think this is a very important hero for positional play: it does not so much force the first move as it disrupts the enemy’s tempo if they overcommit to one spot.

  • Arctic Burn — grants unobstructed movement, increases attack range and attack speed, and with Aghanim’s Scepter becomes a toggleable ability that costs mana and grants bonus movement speed.
  • Splinter Blast — according to the official description, this is one of the hero’s tools for playing through slows and pressure on grouped-up targets.
  • Cold Embrace — encases an ally in an icy cocoon, healing them every second and completely blocking physical damage; with Aghanim’s Shard, allied units gain bonus attack damage after they leave the cocoon.
  • Eldwurm’s Edda — an innate ability that provides the consumable item Eldwurm’s Edda.
  • Winter’s Curse — dispels the target, freezes it in place, and forces nearby allies to attack it at increased speed; essentially, this is one of the most obnoxious buttons in a long teamfight.

Looking at the kit as a whole, Winter Wyvern still feels like a hero about ruining an engage and punishing bad clustering. What matters is not just pressing a button, but choosing the moment when enemies are already poorly positioned or standing too close together.

Changes in recent patches

  • 7.41f: Arctic Burn got a longer cooldown; Cold Embrace had its heal based on max health reduced.
  • 7.41d: the level 10 talent for bonus damage and the level 20 talent for bonus slow from Arctic Burn were nerfed.
  • 7.41c: the movement slow on Splinter Blast was reduced; the level 10 talent tied to healing from Cold Embrace was nerfed again.
  • 7.41: the innate Eldwurm Scholar was removed and Eldwurm’s Edda was added; Arctic Burn can now affect multiple enemy heroes at once, but the damage duration and slow were reduced; Cold Embrace received a new Aghanim’s Shard upgrade; Winter’s Curse was reworked in terms of duration and bonus attack speed; several talents were also nerfed.

In my opinion, if you look at the patch trail, Winter Wyvern is gradually being shifted away from a too-comfortable universal support toward a hero that has to play each window much more carefully. This is felt most strongly on Arctic Burn and Cold Embrace: that’s where most of the hero’s value usually lives.

Statistics

According to OpenDota, over the last 7 days Winter Wyvern was played in 252,168 public matches, with a win rate of 49.6%. That puts it 62nd out of 127 heroes by win rate and 66th by total games played.

  • Herald — 47.1%
  • Guardian — 48.6%
  • Crusader — 48.4%
  • Archon — 48.9%
  • Legend — 49.9%
  • Ancient — 50.6%
  • Divine — 51.6%

In professional matches, OpenDota shows the hero with 44 picks, 27 wins, and 31 bans in the latest period. That looks noticeably healthier than the public stats: in pro games, Winter Wyvern still clearly finds a place, especially when teams need tempo control and a strong defensive button.

Comparing across ranks, what stands out to me is that the hero gets better as the level of play rises. That does not look accidental: the better a team understands how and when to fight, the more valuable Cold Embrace and Winter’s Curse become.

Items and matchups

According to OpenDota in professional matches, Winter Wyvern’s item build is pretty straightforward: it often starts with basic consumables and vision utility, then picks up mobility and cast comfort, and in the late game fills out defensive and save-oriented slots.

  • Starting items: Iron Branch, Tango, Faerie Fire, Blood Grenade, Observer and Sentry Wards, Smoke of Deceit.
  • Early game: Boots of Speed, Power Treads, Null Talisman.
  • Mid game: Blink Dagger, Power Treads, Arcane Boots, Staff of Wizardry, Glimmer Cape, Drum of Endurance.
  • Late game: Force Staff, Aeon Disk, Glimmer Cape, Blink Dagger, Vladmir’s Offering, Lotus Orb.

The matchup spread in professional games is also pretty interesting. Winter Wyvern performs best against Underlord, Alchemist, and Sven, and worst against Treant Protector, Zeus, and Slark.

I think this makes it clear that the hero especially wants fights where it can punish dense or predictable positioning. Against heroes that pressure in an area, quickly find a target, or break up a clean lane hold, Wyvern feels noticeably worse.

Conclusion

Winter Wyvern in 7.41f remains a very recognizable support: strong defensively, annoying as a counter-initiation tool, and dependent on how well the team lets it play through Cold Embrace and Winter’s Curse. After the recent nerfs, in my view, the hero has not lost its identity, but it has become a little less comfortable in drawn-out trades. I would expect it to be judged more by how often it can get away with using its key buttons, rather than just by raw damage or healing numbers.

  3. The Shard part is interesting. That little attack damage bonus after Embrace sounds way more annoying than it reads.

  4. 44 pro picks and still only 49.6 in pubs, that gap is kinda funny. Feels like one of those heroes people draft better than they play.

  8. This hero is better as a greedy core

  9. I actually think the Burn nerf hurts more. If you can’t hover and chip people, the hero loses a lot of the annoying part.

  10. I think Wyvern is one of those heroes that gets stronger the more disciplined the game is. In messy pubs, people blow spells early and your save never lines up clean. In coordinated games, Curse and Embrace punish bad spacing so hard that the hero looks way better than the raw lane numbers say.

  11. what’s the safer build now?
