Hi! Today I took a look at Huskar in 7.41f, and he once again looks like a hero that gets balanced very carefully: they nudged his base stats a bit, but the core idea stayed the same — he sacrifices health to become more dangerous.
Role and abilities
Huskar is a Strength, ranged hero with low complexity and the roles of Carry, Durable, and Initiator. In concept, he plays on risk: the less health he has, the harder he pressures his opponent, and he literally pays for part of his damage with his own HP.
- Inner Fire knocks back nearby enemies, deals damage, and applies silence.
- Burning Spear costs health to ignite his spear and add stacking damage over time to attacks.
- Berserker’s Blood empowers him as he loses health: attack speed, magic resistance, and health regeneration all increase.
- Blood Magic is the innate ability that gives the hero no mana, making his spells cost health instead.
- Life Break lets him leap at a target, remove part of its current health, and slow attack and movement speed.
To me, that combination is exactly what makes the hero so recognizable: he doesn’t so much build an advantage through safe farming as he constantly balances on a very thin line between pressure and self-destruction.
Changes in recent patches
Looking at version 7.41 and the follow-up tweaks, Huskar has been adjusted through a series of small but noticeable shifts.
- 7.41f: base Strength reduced from 23 to 22; base damage lowered from 44–49 to 43–48; Strength gain increased from 3.3 to 3.4.
- 7.41d: Burning Spear burn damage reduced from 5/10/15/20 to 4/8/12/16.
- 7.41c: base health regeneration reduced by 0.25.
- 7.41: Intelligence gain reduced from 1.5 to 0; base movement speed reduced from 295 to 290; Inner Fire damage increased from 105/170/235/300 to 110/180/250/320; knockback mechanics changed; Aghanim’s Shard upgrade removed.
- 7.41: Burning Spear was changed from costing 4% of current health to 2% of max health; burn now has bonus damage equal to 0.5% of the victim’s max health.
- 7.41: Berserker’s Blood received a new Aghanim’s Shard upgrade with an active effect, basic dispel, and delayed healing.
In my opinion, the biggest shift here isn’t the base damage numbers, but the way the hero is being pushed toward a more predictable health cost while also losing some of his old freedom through reduced base speed and the Burning Spear nerf.
Statistics
According to OpenDota, over the last 7 days Huskar was picked 184,475 times in public matches, with a win rate of 46.0%. That puts him 118th out of 127 heroes by win rate and 90th by number of games.
- Herald — 46.5% wins.
- Guardian — 45.2%.
- Crusader — 45.2%.
- Archon — 45.3%.
- Legend — 45.3%.
- Ancient — 45.4%.
- Divine — 46.4%.
In professional matches over the latest period, OpenDota shows 3 picks, 2 wins, and 34 bans. By the numbers, he doesn’t look like a hero people are eager to pick in pubs right now, but in drafts he’s still respected enough to be banned often.
Items and matchups
According to OpenDota, Huskar has a pretty readable item progression in professional matches across the stages of the game.
- Starting items: Gauntlets of Strength, Faerie Fire, Iron Branch, Observer Ward, Magic Stick, Tango.
- Early game: Boots of Speed, Helm of Iron Will, Armlet of Mordiggian, Power Treads, Chainmail, Bracer.
- Mid game: Ogre Axe, Mithril Hammer, Blade of Alacrity, Black King Bar, Blink Dagger, Dragon Lance.
- Late game: Aghanim’s Scepter, Reaver, Satanic, Black King Bar, Yasha, Sange and Yasha.
The list makes perfect sense for a hero who wants to survive focus fire, fight up close, and turn health into a threat. I think the presence of Armlet of Mordiggian, Black King Bar, and Satanic is especially telling: Huskar needs both to keep the pressure up and to avoid dropping out of the fight at the worst possible moment.
- Best against: Chen — 21 games, 76.2% wins; Silencer — 45 games, 66.7%; Earthshaker — 23 games, 65.2%.
- Worst against: Kunkka — 25 games, 28.0% wins; Broodmother — 20 games, 30.0%; Monkey King — 37 games, 32.4%.
The matchups are pretty much what you’d expect for Huskar: he likes heroes who struggle against direct tempo and pressure, while heroes that can break his initiation or punish him at short range tend to give him much worse results.
Conclusion
After 7.41f, Huskar gives me the impression of a hero that isn’t being reinvented, just trimmed and tuned in small ways. The base Strength nerf and the old set of nerfs make him a little less comfortable early on, but the core idea is unchanged: this is still a hero about risk, timing, and playing on low health. Statistically, he doesn’t look especially strong in pubs right now, but in professional matches he’s still respected with bans. I’d expect more small numerical tweaks around him, not a major rework.

bkb after armlet?
If the enemy has real catch, pretty much. Huskar hates getting controlled before he can drain HP into damage.
in my games bkb feels non negotiable, supports just explode if he gets on top
I mean, if you need to ask, the fight is already weird. Husk is one of those heroes where the draft decides the item order more than the build does.
That 0 mana thing is still wild to me. The hero basically turns HP into every spell cast, which makes the whole lane feel like a gamble from level 1. I get why they keep nudging the numbers instead of changing the kit, though. It’s such a simple design that any big rework would probably break him one way or another.
Huskar is just a ban hero
Kinda, but only because people hate dealing with him when he gets space. If he falls behind, he looks way less scary than the ban rate suggests.
nah, even behind he still forces bad fights. the real issue is pubs never respect the jump and then wonder why their backline is dead.
bad teams feed him anyway
Do you even still rush armlet on him, or is pike/bkb the real stuff now?
armlet still first?
Usually yeah, unless the lane is a disaster.
