Marci in 7.41f: more tempo on Rebound and the same flexible style

Hi! Today I’m looking at Marci in 7.41f, and the reason is pretty clear: the hero has gotten another targeted adjustment, while still remaining one of the most flexible characters in the pool — both in terms of roles and game tempo.

Role and abilities

Marci is a universal melee hero with 2 out of 3 difficulty. According to her official description, she “bounds across the battlefield and hurls enemies aside with swift attacks,” and her kit makes it pretty clear why she so often works both as a core and as a support.

  • Dispose — grabs an ally or enemy and throws them over herself. On landing, enemies take damage and are slowed, and if the target was an enemy, they suffer from the effect as well.
  • Rebound — Marci closes in on an allied target and bounces off it in the chosen direction. The landing deals damage and stuns enemies in the area, and with the alternate cast, the hero jumps together with the ally to the chosen point. The Aghanim’s Shard upgrade increases damage, allows the ability to be cast on enemies, and grants bonus movement speed.
  • Bodyguard — passively grants the owner lifesteal and attack damage bonus. After the rework, this ability also became an active part of the kit, so Marci can support both herself and an ally more effectively.
  • Special Delivery — an innate ability that instantly teleports the courier to the hero and, if the courier was at the fountain, allows items to be taken from the stash.
  • Unleash — a sequence of strikes where the last hit in each combo creates a pulse around the target. Aghanim’s Scepter grants a basic dispel on activation and makes the other abilities also create pulses while it is active.

I think it’s the Rebound and Dispose combo that still defines how Marci should start a fight: get in fast, steal position, and force the enemy to fight on unfavorable ground. And Bodyguard makes the hero noticeably more interesting in drawn-out skirmishes than she used to be.

Changes in the latest patches

If we go from newest to oldest, Marci has picked up several small but useful tweaks in recent updates.

  • 7.41f: Rebound‘s bonus movement speed for allies changed from 15/20/25/30% to 25%.
  • 7.41d: Special Delivery‘s cooldown was reduced from 245 – 5 seconds per level to 215 – 5 seconds per level; Bodyguard‘s mana cost was reduced from 60/65/70/75 to 60.
  • 7.41c: Bodyguard‘s cast range increased from 500 to 600; the level 15 talent for bonus Dispose damage was increased from 100 to 115.
  • 7.41: Special Delivery gained stash behavior if the courier was at the fountain, and its cooldown changed from 240 to 245 – 5 seconds per level. Bodyguard was heavily reworked: the ability now has passive and active components, the passive grants +12/18/24/30% lifesteal and +12/18/24/30% of base damage as attack damage, and when cast on an ally, they receive 75% of the passive bonuses and a shared barrier with the owner. Talents were also changed: level 15 — instead of bonus Rebound acceleration, there is now bonus Bodyguard bonus damage; level 20 — Unleash acceleration increased from 10% to 15%; level 25 — instead of bonus Bodyguard damage, there is now strong dispel from Bodyguard.

In my opinion, the main point of these patches is not that Marci was “broken” or “buffed,” but that she is being nudged toward a clearer combat role: get an ally into the fight faster, brawl more comfortably around them, and rely less on random windows in mana cost or cast range.

Statistics

According to OpenDota, over the last 7 days Marci was played in 291,052 public matches and has a 48.4% win rate. That’s 94th out of 127 heroes by win rate and 54th by number of games.

  • Herald — 48.0%
  • Guardian — 47.6%
  • Crusader — 48.1%
  • Archon — 48.4%
  • Legend — 47.9%
  • Ancient — 48.5%
  • Divine — 49.5%

To me, the numbers look pretty even: the hero isn’t collapsing, but she also doesn’t look like someone pubs are pushing to the top of the standings in huge numbers. At the same time, the rank groups are almost flat, and in Divine Marci already feels a bit better than she does on average across the sample.

In professional matches, according to OpenDota, Marci has 5 picks, 1 win, and 1 ban over the latest period. That’s not much, so I wouldn’t read too much into that figure — it mainly shows that the hero remains a situational tool, not a mandatory part of the meta.

Items and matchups

Looking at pro matches on OpenDota, you can see how Marci is usually built across the stages of the game. The item set here is pretty logical: first the hero tries to secure the lane and keep her tempo, and then she turns into an initiator or a durable frontliner.

  • Starting items: Iron Branch, Tango, Blood Grenade, Sentry Ward, Faerie Fire, Magic Stick.
  • Early game: Boots of Speed, Chainmail, Phase Boots, Bracer, Helm of Iron Will, Helm of the Dominator.
  • Mid game: Ogre Axe, Mithril Hammer, Phase Boots, Black King Bar, Pavise, Solar Crest.
  • Late game: Blink Dagger, Skull Basher, Black King Bar, Sange, Abyssal Blade, Sacred Relic.

And this is where, in my opinion, it becomes especially clear that Marci values not just damage, but also the ability to start the fight first and not fall apart in return. Phase Boots, Black King Bar, and Blink Dagger look like the backbone, and everything else depends on whether the team needs more control, survivability, or finishing power.

If we look at matchups in professional games among opponents with 20+ matches, the picture is interesting too.

  • Best against: Bounty Hunter — 25 games, 76.0% win rate; Kunkka — 34 games, 64.7%; Earth Spirit — 36 games, 63.9%.
  • Worst against: Clinkz — 26 games, 30.8%; Phoenix — 113 games, 33.6%; Venomancer — 28 games, 35.7%.

I’d put it this way: against heroes who care about quickly taking a good position and playing around evasion, Marci feels noticeably more comfortable. But when the opponent stretches the fight out, forces awkward vision, or makes it hard to actually reach the target, the hero has a much tougher time.

Conclusion

Marci in 7.41f remains a hero that loves tempo and close range. The latest changes don’t overturn her identity; they mostly smooth out awkward points: Rebound gives a more consistent bonus, Bodyguard is easier to use, and the old 7.41 changes made the kit significantly stronger in teamfights.

By the OpenDota numbers, Marci looks more stable than explosive: the win rate isn’t bad, but it isn’t outstanding either, and she has been picked only a little in professional matches. I think this is exactly the kind of case where the hero does a lot not by herself, but through how well the team can use her fight-starting and quick-position-switching potential. We’ll see whether they keep tuning this part of the kit or whether Marci stays in her current state for a while longer.

  1. Still worth first picking?

  2. Marci is better mid than support 🙂

    1. Nah, support Marci gets more done. Mid slows her down unless the lane is completely free.

  3. Marci courier teleport is basically cheat code energy
