Hi! Today I’m looking at Ancient Apparition in patch 7.41f, and what matters here isn’t the fact of the fresh update itself, but the whole chain of changes that has noticeably buffed the hero over the last few versions. He still remains a long-range Intelligence support focused on control, magical damage, and global pressure through Ice Blast, but now his kit feels a bit denser and, in some places, more aggressive.
Role and abilities
According to the official description, Ancient Apparition is a hero who can unleash a powerful ice projectile across the entire battlefield, freeze wounded enemies to death, and keep opponents under pressure by slowing them and helping allies. In terms of role, he looks like a classic Support with extra value from Nuker and Disabler.
- Cold Feet places a curse on an enemy with periodic damage.
- Ice Vortex creates an area of icy energy that deals damage, slows, and amplifies incoming magical damage.
- Chilling Touch empowers the next attack: it gains bonus magical damage and slow.
- Bone Chill is the innate ability: damage from his spells briefly slows enemies, and against enemy heroes it also reduces strength. The effects stack and persist independently.
- Ice Blast sends a projectile to a chosen point on the map, and a second cast detonates the icy sphere. The farther it travels, the larger the explosion radius, and targets caught in it take periodic damage and cannot heal or regenerate health.
What stands out about this hero, in my opinion, is not just the ability to land one big burst combo, but to constantly force the enemy into an awkward position. I think that’s exactly where Ancient Apparition is valuable: he doesn’t need to be nearby to influence a fight, and his ultimate makes it very dangerous to play the map carelessly.
Changes in the latest patches
- 7.41e: Ice Blast cooldown reduced from 60/50/40 to 50/45/40 seconds.
- 7.41d: Cold Feet damage per second increased from 20/40/60/80 to 25/45/65/85; Chilling Touch cooldown reduced from 12/9/6/3 to 10/7.5/5/2.5 seconds, and damage increased from 30/60/90/120 to 35/65/95/125.
- 7.41c: Ice Blast projectile width and base explosion radius increased from 275 to 300; the level 20 talent with bonus Chilling Touch damage was buffed from 80 to 100.
- 7.41b: Bone Chill‘s bonus strength reduction from Aghanim’s Scepter increased from 0.3 to 0.8.
- 7.41a: Bone Chill‘s base strength reduction increased from 0.1 to 0.2.
- 7.41: the old innate Death Rime was removed, and Bone Chill became the new innate ability; at the same time, Cold Feet, Ice Vortex, and Ice Blast gained damage over time, Ice Vortex also got a slow, Chilling Touch became cheaper in mana, and some talents were reworked.
Looking at this chain of changes specifically, it seems to me the hero was clearly being pushed toward a more active, more frequent spell-based playstyle. This is especially noticeable with Ice Blast and Chilling Touch: one became easier to use, while the other got sharper in tempo.
Statistics
According to OpenDota over the last 7 days, Ancient Apparition was played in 324,772 public matches, and his win rate stands at 51.4%. By that metric, the hero is in 30th place out of 127, and by games played — 48th.
Breaking win rate down by rank, the picture looks like this: Herald — 52.6%; Guardian — 51.7%; Crusader — 52.4%; Archon — 51.9%; Legend — 51.6%; Ancient — 50.6%; Divine — 49.5%.
On the numbers, he looks pretty even: not collapsing at the bottom of the table, and at the same time not looking like a hero that has to define the meta. I think that kind of stability for a support with a global ultimate is already a good sign. What’s especially interesting is that at higher ranks his win rate dips slightly: maybe players there punish his vulnerability and the need to set up positioning in advance more effectively.
Items and matchups
In professional matches, Ancient Apparition most often repeats a fairly straightforward item set across the different stages of the game.
- Starting items: Iron Branch, Tango, Blood Grenade, Observer and Sentry Wards, Faerie Fire, Sentry Ward.
- Early game: Boots of Speed, Arcane Boots, Tranquil Boots, Urn of Shadows, Null Talisman, Chainmail.
- Mid game: Arcane Boots, Staff of Wizardry, Glimmer Cape, Aghanim’s Shard, Vitality Booster, Rod of Atos.
- Late game: Blink Dagger, Glimmer Cape, Force Staff, Mystic Staff, Scythe of Vyse, Aeon Disk.
From this item set, I’d say the hero is most often built as a comfortable, durable support with long-range fight impact and the ability to take a position for a good Ice Blast. There’s nothing surprising here: plenty of mobility, a bit of survivability, a bit of spell amplification.
The matchup picture is interesting too. Ancient Apparition feels best against Anti-Mage — 24 games and 66.7% win rate, Vengeful Spirit — 20 games and 65.0%, and Doom — 20 games and 65.0%.
He looks worst against Alchemist — 20 games and 30.0% win rate, Primal Beast — 29 games and 31.0%, and Spirit Breaker — 57 games and 31.6%.
I think that all makes pretty good sense: Ancient Apparition is especially strong where he can punish healing, finishing off targets, and failed attempts to escape a fight, but he has a harder time against heroes that jump in quickly, break the distance, and force him to react in a hurry.
Conclusion
Ancient Apparition in 7.41f looks like a hero that has been steadily improved without any dramatic overcorrections. He got a more convenient Ice Blast, a nastier Cold Feet, a faster Chilling Touch, and a noticeably stronger Bone Chill. Against the backdrop of OpenDota statistics, that doesn’t look like a lucky streak: the hero is holding steady and doesn’t feel forgotten.
I’d view him as a very solid option for anyone who likes a support with global pressure and isn’t afraid to play around range and timing. If they keep nudging him a little more toward spell frequency and ease of use, then in pubs it’ll only keep getting more comfortable to set up your moments around Ice Blast.

it was one of those games where nobody wants to hit the high ground unless blast is down. once it landed, they just stopped moving and we took everything. hero feels way more annoying when the other team has to respect that clock.
had a blast cancel a whole push ))
was it from max range?
Bone Chill
the divine wr drop is the only weird part here
Ice Blast
