Legion Commander in 7.41f: what changed after patch 7.41

Legion Commander in 7.41f: what changed after patch 7.41

Hello! Today I’m taking a look at Legion Commander in 7.41f, and the reason is simple: the hero still feels heavily centered around Duel, but the latest patches have noticeably adjusted her base stats and the way her key abilities work. I think this is a good moment to once again look at exactly what changed and how that shows up in the numbers.

Role and abilities

Legion Commander is a Strength melee hero with low complexity and a role pool that shows her style pretty well: she can be a Carry, Nuker, Disabler, Durable, and Initiator. Her hero description is straightforward enough: she jumps into fights, challenges an enemy to Duel, and gets stronger with every win. This is not a hero that enjoys long, careful ranged play; in my view, her value almost always comes down to whether she can force a trade or find a Duel target at the right moment.

  • Overwhelming Odds — deals damage to enemies and increases the owner’s attack speed. The Aghanim’s Shard upgrade expands the radius and turns part of the damage dealt to enemy heroes into a barrier.
  • Press The Attack — dispels negative effects from an allied target, granting bonus movement speed and health regeneration. The Aghanim’s Scepter upgrade increases the movement speed bonus.
  • Moment of Courage — after a certain number of attacks on her, she counterattacks the target with additional lifesteal.
  • Outfight Them! — an innate ability that grants stacking armor bonuses, with a separate duration for each instance.
  • Duel — challenges an enemy hero to a duel, where both are forced to attack each other, cannot use items, and the target also cannot cast abilities. The winner gains a permanent damage bonus. The Aghanim’s Scepter upgrade automatically casts Press the Attack around the owner after a victory.

In my opinion, Legion Commander still lives at the intersection of simplicity and a heavy reliance on execution. Her kit is fairly easy to understand, but Duel is what makes the hero dangerous or, on the flip side, too comfortable for the opponent if the initiation goes onto the wrong target.

Changes in recent patches

If you look at the recent patch history, Legion Commander in 7.41 had her core armor, Duel, and counterattack mechanics noticeably reworked. After that, parts of it were adjusted through numbers and talents. For me, the main thing here isn’t one specific number, but that the hero became a little less linear and a little more dependent on the window after a successful jump.

  • 7.41e: base Strength increased from 24 to 25; level 1 damage increased from 57–61 to 58–62; Strength gain decreased from 3.1 to 3; base attack speed increased from 100 to 105; the level 25 Duel cooldown on victory talent was replaced with a 30 sec. Duel cooldown reduction on winning a Duel.
  • 7.41d: Duel mana cost increased from 75 to 80/100/120.
  • 7.41a: Outfight Them! no longer grants passive armor; the level 20 talent with Duel duration bonus was reduced from 1 to 0.75 seconds; the level 25 talent with Moment of Courage lifesteal bonus increased from 75% to 100%.
  • 7.41: base armor reduced by 1; Outfight Them! received a major rework and now passively increases the owner’s armor, as well as granting bonuses for used abilities; Overwhelming Odds now slows enemies for a short time and works differently with Aghanim’s Shard; Press The Attack now stacks by effects and received an Aghanim’s Scepter upgrade; Moment of Courage no longer works by chance and now triggers after several attacks; Duel no longer prevents the initiator from casting other abilities, but still prevents item usage; the Aghanim’s Shard upgrade was removed and the Aghanim’s Scepter upgrade was changed; talents were also redistributed to fit the new mechanics.

To me, the most important part here isn’t a single buff or nerf, but that Legion Commander was pushed more toward a playstyle built around consecutive actions and the right ability window, rather than pure Duel strength alone.

Statistics

According to OpenDota data from the last 7 days, Legion Commander was played in 582,754 public matches. Her win rate is 52.7%, which is 8th out of 127 heroes by win rate, while she ranks 16th by number of games played. On paper, that looks very solid: not just a popular hero, but also one that holds a strong win percentage.

  • Herald — 52.3%
  • Guardian — 52.6%
  • Crusader — 52.9%
  • Archon — 53.1%
  • Legend — 52.7%
  • Ancient — 52.5%
  • Divine — 51.2%

Looking at the ranks, the picture is very even: the hero stays above 52% almost everywhere, and on Divine she dips to 51.2%. To me, that suggests not a random spike, but a stable, workable peak that feels strong across different skill levels.

Items and opponents

In professional matches, Legion Commander is most often built through starting stats and then into items that help her either start fights quickly or survive the counter-focus. That makes sense for a hero that wants not just to jump in, but also to live through the moment after Duel.

  • Starting items: Iron Branch, Gauntlets of Strength, Tango, Quelling Blade, Circlet, Magic Stick.
  • Early game: Boots of Speed, Bracer, Chainmail, Phase Boots, Broadsword, Splintmail.
  • Mid game: Blink Dagger, Blade Mail, Ogre Axe, Broadsword, Mithril Hammer, Claymore.
  • Late game: Black King Bar, Shadow Blade, Demon Edge, Hyperstone, Assault Cuirass, Aghanim’s Scepter.

The matchup chart is pretty telling too. Legion Commander feels better against heroes she can catch quickly and force to play on her terms, and worse against heroes that make it hard to finish Duel the way she wants or survive her burst.

  • Best against: Timbersaw — 29 games, 69.0% win rate; Venomancer — 36 games, 63.9% win rate; Luna — 46 games, 63.0% win rate.
  • Worst against: Vengeful Spirit — 20 games, 25.0% win rate; Abaddon — 24 games, 25.0% win rate; Tusk — 34 games, 26.5% win rate.

I think this shows the hero’s old problem very clearly: if the target doesn’t let her comfortably execute Duel or helps survive it, Legion Commander’s value drops sharply.

Conclusion

In 7.41f, Legion Commander looks like a hero that wasn’t just tweaked numerically, but carefully reshaped into a more coherent playstyle. Her base stats, armor, the Outfight Them! mechanic, and the updated talents together make her a little cleaner in the early game and just as dangerous when she finds a good Duel. According to OpenDota data, the hero also feels very strong in terms of win rate right now, so I definitely wouldn’t write her off. Quite the opposite: I’d be interested to see how quickly players fully adapt to the new version and whether she starts to shine even more in pubs.
