Hello! Today I’m looking at Lifestealer in 7.41f — a hero you can recognize even without any hints: he loves getting right in your face, chewing through his target, and never giving them a chance for a calm fight. The reason this time is simple: the fresh patch cut back a bit on his comfort, but by the numbers he still doesn’t look like a random guest in the current meta.
Role and abilities
Lifestealer is a melee Strength core with the roles Carry, Durable, Disabler, and Escape. The kit feels like it’s built entirely around extended contact: he doesn’t so much “jump in” as latch onto a target and never let go, while Infest adds that signature way to enter a fight without using the front door.
- Rage makes the hero spell immune, grants magic resistance, and increases movement speed.
- Open Wounds slows an enemy and lets allies heal from the damage dealt to them.
- Feast adds damage and lifesteal based on the target’s maximum health, and permanently increases health from killed creeps.
- Ghoul Frenzy is the innate passive that increases attack speed.
- Infest lets him hide inside a unit, restore health, then burst out and damage enemies around him; with Aghanim’s Scepter, the hero can also enter an enemy hero for a short time.
I like that the hero’s job list hasn’t spread into a dozen directions: he’s still about close-range pressure, sticking to a target, and getting into fights cleanly. But right now, in my opinion, his strength is less about “I press my buttons and disappear” and more about choosing the right moment and the right target.
Changes in recent patches
Going from the newest patch backward, Lifestealer’s picture is pretty clear: in 7.41f he was slowed down a little, while in 7.41 he got a major overhaul and ended up looking much more like the hero we see now.
- 7.41f: Rage had its cooldown increased; Infest had its duration on enemies with Aghanim’s Scepter reduced; the level 10 talent lost some movement speed bonus.
- 7.41a: base damage was lowered; Ghoul Frenzy attack speed bonus was reduced; the extra movement speed from Rage was weakened; Feast maximum health bonus was reduced.
- 7.41: base stats and part of the abilities were heavily reworked — base damage, attack speed, and movement speed were increased; Ghoul Frenzy became innate; Rage gained a movement speed bonus; Feast became a basic ability; Infest on ancient creeps was simplified; Aghanim’s Shard effects and several talents were changed.
In my view, patch 7.41 is especially important: it didn’t just tweak the numbers, it noticeably changed how the hero feels. Meanwhile, 7.41a and 7.41f look more like careful attempts to keep him from scaling too freely.
Statistics
According to OpenDota, over the last 7 days in public matches Lifestealer had 558,048 games and a 51.8% win rate. That puts him 22nd out of 127 heroes by win rate and 21st by number of games. For a hero like this, those are perfectly workable numbers: not flashy, but not bad enough to write him off either.
- Herald: 50.5%
- Guardian: 50.3%
- Crusader: 51.1%
- Archon: 51.9%
- Legend: 52.3%
- Ancient: 52.6%
- Divine: 51.6%
In professional matches, according to OpenDota for the latest period, he has 29 picks, 11 wins, and 87 bans. That’s more interesting than it might seem at first glance: there are quite a lot of bans, but the 37.9% win rate shows that in practice the hero doesn’t always live up to expectations.
Items and matchups
As for items in professional matches, Lifestealer’s picture is exactly what you’d expect: he likes to speed up, stick to a target, and amplify direct pressure. The build by game stage shows that clearly.
- Starting items: Gauntlets of Strength, Quelling Blade, Iron Branch, Faerie Fire, Tango, Magic Stick.
- Early game: Boots of Speed, Chainmail, Phase Boots, Talisman of Evasion, Helm of Iron Will, Sacred Relic.
- Mid game: Sacred Relic, Radiance, Talisman of Evasion, Blade of Alacrity, Armlet of Mordiggian, Yasha.
- Late game: Aghanim’s Scepter, Skull Basher, Hyperstone, Assault Cuirass, Sange, Abyssal Blade.
His matchups in the professional stats look very different from one opponent to another. Against some heroes everything goes fairly smoothly, while against others it gets much harder, and as usual it comes down to whether he can actually reach his target and keep his tempo.
- Best against: Phantom Assassin, Earthshaker, Witch Doctor.
- Worst against: Enigma, Doom, Io.
I don’t think there’s anything surprising here: Lifestealer likes heroes he can catch and keep locked in a fight, and feels worse where he’s either restrained or his entire plan for a drawn-out brawl gets broken.
Conclusion
Lifestealer in 7.41f didn’t get anything dramatic, and that’s probably a good thing: the hero remains in a clear shape, just without the old generosity from the last major changes. On the numbers, he’s still alive and relevant, and in terms of feel — this is one of those cases where the hero holds on not because of one broken button, but because of a very cohesive kit. I’d expect not sharp spikes from him, but a steady dependence on how easily he’ll be allowed to enter fights and work on the priority target.

feast still does too much
not really, his whole damage pattern is built around it. if you cut that too hard he stops being lifestealer and just becomes some slow melee dude.
thats exactly my point, he already does everything from one passive. if a hero gets damage sustain and hp scaling all in one place it gets old fast.
i get why it feels stacked, but at least you know what he is supposed to do. if feast were weak too, the hero would just lose the one thing that keeps him relevant and people would drop him overnight.
Rage cd hurts, finally
OpenDota showing 29 picks and 87 bans is wild. That looks like teams respect him way more than they actually want to play him.
ban button farming value
Honestly the hero is mostly a draft trap. Ban numbers look scary, but in actual games he just walks at one target and hopes the team helps him pretend that is a plan.
nah, if he reaches the right target it’s over
Sometimes, sure. I still think the draft does most of the work, because if the enemy has real control he looks way less scary than the ban count suggests.
Ghoul Frenzy врожденной сделали, норм
That Ancient winrate bump is the only thing I trust here.
The 7.41 change was probably the real story here, not this tiny nerf. When a hero gets a whole rework and keeps a good winrate after that, small taps later do not change the vibe much. He is still the same annoying frontliner, just with a bit less free movement and less lazy Scepter stuff.
The Scepter cut is the part I care about more than Rage. If that Infest on heroes window got shorter, his weird pickoff plays are a lot less free now.
shorter yes but still annoying
Sure, but that tiny window is what made the jump feel cheap in some fights. Now he has to commit a bit harder instead of just vanishing in and out.
best support to pair with him?
Anything that can force the enemy to stand still for a second helps a lot. Set up his jump, make the target stay in place, and he gets way more out of Rage and Open Wounds than from some fancy lane combo.
are you sure that’s the right question?
