Windranger in 7.41f: what changed after the hero rework

Windranger in 7.41f: what changed after the hero rework

Hi! Today I’m looking at Windranger — a hero that was heavily reworked in 7.41 and then fine-tuned with small numeric changes. After 7.41f, I want to look at her again not as the old familiar Windranger, but as a hero with a refreshed innate mechanic and a slightly different game rhythm.

Role and abilities

According to the official description, Windranger is a nimble archer who constantly keeps her distance and looks for the right moment to strike. In terms of roles, she remains flexible: Carry, Support, Nuker, Disabler, and Escape, and her difficulty is 2 out of 3. This is the kind of hero that can start fights, catch a target with a combo, and finish it off with a shot.

  • Shackleshot binds a target to an enemy or a tree behind it.
  • Powershot is a channeled shot that deals damage and slow, both of which increase the longer it is charged.
  • Windrun grants movement speed and evasion against all physical attacks.
  • Gale Force with Aghanim’s Shard pushes enemies in a chosen direction.
  • Focus Fire increases attack speed but reduces attack damage, except for item effect damage.
  • Tailwind is the innate ability: using spells grants a stacking speed boost, and passively increases maximum movement speed. With Aghanim’s Scepter, the effect lasts longer, does not dispel, and attacks also grant it.

It seems to me that Tailwind is what changes Windranger’s feel the most right now. She has clearly shifted toward frequent spell casts and short mobility windows, not just the familiar Windrun.

Changes in the latest patches

Looking from the newest patch backward, 7.41c made a small late-game adjustment:

  • the level 25 talent that reduces cooldown when Focus Fire kills its target was nerfed from 18 to 16 seconds;
  • the level 25 Powershot execute talent now triggers at 16% health instead of 15%.

In 7.41b, Windranger received more noticeable buffs to her base and combat stats:

  • base health regeneration was increased by 0.5;
  • Powershot got a stronger slow;
  • Gale Force cooldown was reduced from 30 to 25 seconds.

The biggest overhaul came in 7.41a and 7.41:

  • base Agility was raised from 17 to 20, and level 1 damage went from 47–59 to 49–61;
  • Tailwind became much more important: the base effect duration and the maximum duration with Aghanim’s Scepter were increased;
  • Focus Fire got a shorter cooldown;
  • base movement speed was reduced from 290 to 285;
  • the old innate Easy Breezy was removed and replaced with Tailwind;
  • Windrun was nerfed in bonus movement speed, but its cooldown was reduced;
  • Windrun lost its Aghanim’s Scepter upgrade;
  • the talents were reworked too: some old bonuses were replaced by Windrun and Tailwind upgrades, while the level 25 talent is now tied to Powershot.

To me, this is an important shift: the hero is less dependent on the old “press Windrun and live” pattern, and more about tempo, positioning, and smart spell usage.

Statistics

According to OpenDota data over the last 7 days, Windranger played 705,737 games in public matches. Her win rate is 48.5%, which puts her 90th out of 127 heroes by win rate, while she ranks 9th by total games played. In ranked matches, the picture is fairly even: from 48.0% at Archon to 49.0% at Divine.

In professional matches over the same period, Windranger has 43 picks, 18 wins, and a 41.9% win rate, plus 20 bans. By the numbers, this doesn’t look like a hero that is dominating the scene right now, but it also can’t be called a failure: the picks are there, the results are just modest for now.

Honestly, what interests me most here is not the overall win rate, but the fact that the hero remains relevant in both pubs and the pro scene without feeling like she has already been fully solved and reduced to a perfect formula.

Items and matchups

In professional matches, Windranger is most often built like this:

  • early game — Iron Branch, Circlet, Tango, Blood Grenade, Faerie Fire, Observer and Sentry Wards;
  • early game progression — Boots of Speed, Null Talisman, Power Treads, Javelin, Urn of Shadows, Bracer;
  • mid game — Essence Distiller, Mithril Hammer, Maelstrom, Ogre Axe, Hyperstone, Mjollnir;
  • late game — Blink Dagger, Demon Edge, Crystalys, Consecrated Wraps, Daedalus, Force Staff.

In professional matchups, the picture looks like this:

  • Windranger feels best against Grimstroke, Chaos Knight, and Tinker;
  • she struggles most against Treant Protector, Broodmother, and Enigma.

What stands out to me here is that in the late game, alongside the usual damage and mobility items, there are also items for more precise fight entries. That fits the hero’s current idea well: not just firing away, but choosing the right angle and the right moment.

Conclusion

Windranger in 7.41f looks like a hero that was loosened from the old formula and pushed harder toward tempo and mobility. The 7.41a and 7.41b buffs helped her avoid falling apart after the rework, while the later tweaks mostly smoothed out the extremes. To me, she is not the easiest hero to get consistent results from right now, but she is very interesting for players who like an active, sharp playstyle and aren’t afraid to play around positioning.

  5. Shackleshot still looks filthy

  8. BKB before she gets on you still sounds mandatory. If she finds one clean angle, the whole fight turns into a chase screen.

    1. BKB helps, but it is not the whole answer. If your team lets her play around vision and trees, she still gets the pick she wants and BKB only delays the problem instead of fixing it.

  9. Віндранка зараз майже мідер

    1. Ні, мід вона ще може, але не як головна ставка. Якщо брати її на центральну лінію, то саме під активну карту, а не під спокійний фарм.

  10. У мене на ній уже двічі рятувала хвилина на Tailwind)))

  11. Базова швидкість їй і не потрібна
