Hi! Today I’m looking at Death Prophet in 7.41f, and the reason is simple: the hero is back in focus thanks to the fresh patch and a whole chain of tweaks that have been building since 7.41. I think Death Prophet is always interesting to read through the lens of small changes — she rarely breaks from one huge update, but she reacts very noticeably to armor, tempo, talents, and the speed of her spirits.
Role and abilities
Death Prophet is a ranged hero with the universal primary attribute and a very low difficulty rating on the official scale. In terms of roles, she looks like a hybrid that can deal damage, shove lanes, and make life miserable for opponents in fights.
- Carry — 1
- Nuker — 1
- Disabler — 1
- Pusher — 3
According to Valve, Death Prophet “summons an army of spirits to the fight,” and that describes her style very accurately. She’s not about delicate one-shot burst combos, but about constant pressure: sending out one deadly wave after another, keeping enemies under threat from Silence, and, when the time comes, turning Exorcism into a tool for both hero kills and building damage.
- Crypt Swarm — sends a swarm of winged creatures forward, damaging enemies in their path.
- Silence — releases a projectile that prevents enemies in the targeted area from casting abilities.
- Spirit Siphon — creates a mystical link with an enemy unit and transfers its health to you.
- Witchcraft — innate ability: each level increases movement speed and reduces spell cooldowns.
- Exorcism — releases evil spirits that drain health from nearby enemies and structures; buildings take 50% damage. The Aghanim’s Scepter upgrade creates a spirit every time the owner hits an enemy with an ability or attack, then the spirit returns and restores health.
Changes in recent patches
Looking from newest to oldest, 7.41f brought no official changes for Death Prophet, and that in itself is interesting: the hero arrived in the latest patch after a fairly dense series of adjustments. I’d say the main story now isn’t another micro-buff, but how the accumulated changes work together.
- 7.41e — agility gain increased from 2 to 2.3; damage gain per level increased from 3.6 to 3.7.
- 7.41b — Exorcism: spirit damage increased from 64 to 65/68/71.
- 7.41a — Spirit Siphon: mana cost reduced from 80 to 60.
- 7.41 — base armor increased by 1; Witchcraft got new formulas for the speed bonus and cooldown reduction; Silence flies faster; Exorcism began summoning spirits more frequently; talents at levels 10, 15, 20, and 25 were replaced with new options.
To me, there’s a clear overall direction here: Death Prophet is being shaped into a more composed and comfortable tempo hero. Extra armor, a smoother Silence, a denser Exorcism, and a cheaper Spirit Siphon all push her toward more reliable pressure and drawn-out fights. The talent changes also move her even further away from the old static bonuses and toward tempo, survivability, and ult strength.
Statistics
According to OpenDota data over the last 7 days, Death Prophet has 203,877 games in public matches and a 48.4% win rate. That puts her 92nd out of 127 heroes by win rate and 73rd by pick count. Looking only at the numbers, the hero doesn’t look especially convincing right now.
At the same time, the rank-by-rank picture is fairly even: from 47.1% at Herald to 49.0% at Ancient. At Divine, the number is slightly lower at 48.9%. In other words, Death Prophet doesn’t collapse in lower brackets, but she also doesn’t spike into obvious strength at the top end. I think that’s a typical pattern for a hero that depends on match tempo and on how well the team can use her Exorcism timing.
- Herald — 47.1%
- Guardian — 47.6%
- Crusader — 47.8%
- Archon — 48.0%
- Legend — 48.6%
- Ancient — 49.0%
- Divine — 48.9%
In professional matches, according to OpenDota for the latest period, the hero appeared rarely: 4 picks, 2 wins, 3 bans. With a sample like that, I wouldn’t draw any sweeping conclusions, but the fact that she still shows up means Death Prophet remains a viable option for tempo play and tower pressure.
Items and matchups
Item-wise in pro matches, the picture is pretty clear. In the early game, Death Prophet builds the basics for lane and mana, then shifts into survivability, control, and teamfight power. I like that: she doesn’t look like a hero forced into one single “correct” build, but like a character who flexes to match the rhythm of the map.
- Starting items: Iron Branch, Tango, Faerie Fire, Circlet, Observer Ward, Mantle of Intelligence.
- Early game: Boots of Speed, Bottle, Null Talisman, Power Treads, Chainmail, Phase Boots.
- Mid game: Staff of Wizardry, Ogre Axe, Mithril Hammer, Vitality Booster, Eul’s Scepter of Divinity, Black King Bar.
- Late game: Shiva’s Guard, Black King Bar, Blink Dagger, Mystic Staff, Scythe of Vyse, Kaya and Sange.
In pro matchups, Death Prophet feels best against Morphling, Underlord, and Bane — OpenDota shows good win percentages there. On the other hand, the stats are notably worse against Terrorblade, Sniper, and Clockwerk. To me, that makes perfect sense for a hero that wants to force tempo: if the opponent can survive her pressure, break the distance, or disrupt the fight rhythm, Death Prophet becomes much less comfortable.
- Best against: Morphling — 20 games, 70.0%; Underlord — 36 games, 66.7%; Bane — 21 games, 66.7%.
- Worst against: Terrorblade — 23 games, 17.4%; Sniper — 44 games, 20.5%; Clockwerk — 32 games, 25.0%.
Conclusion
Death Prophet in 7.41f doesn’t have a fresh direct buff, but she comes into the patch after a long series of careful improvements that make her a bit tankier, smoother, and more stable. By the numbers, she doesn’t look like an undeniably strong hero right now, but she does have a clear profile: tempo, map pressure, a strong Exorcism timing window, and a dependence on how well her team can support that plan. I think heroes like this are the most interesting ones to read after a string of patches: nothing radical on paper, yet the feel of the game changes noticeably.
