Disruptor in 7.41f: a bit more Intelligence and a steadier lane

Hi! Today I’m looking at Disruptor, and the reason is pretty straightforward: in 7.41f, the hero got tweaked again, and even before that he’d long been living on the thin line between a simple support and a very annoying initiator. I like heroes like that — the ones that don’t just throw spells, but actually break the shape of a fight.

Role and abilities

Disruptor is a ranged Intelligence hero with a 2 out of 3 difficulty rating, and his official roles are Support, Disabler, Nuker, and Initiator. In my opinion, his strength lies exactly in the fact that he doesn’t need super complex mechanics, but he punishes greed and bad positioning very hard.

  • Thunder Strike — repeatedly zaps the target unit with lightning and grants vision over the target. With Aghanim’s Shard, the spell gains increased cast range and more hits.
  • Glimpse — instantly kills illusions, and the damage depends on how far the target has moved, but it can’t exceed the maximum.
  • Kinetic Field — after a short delay, creates a circular barrier that enemies cannot pass through. With Aghanim’s Shard, both forms gain separate cooldowns.
  • Kinetic Fence — appears with Aghanim’s Shard and creates a wall of kinetic energy that enemies cannot pass through.
  • Electromagnetic Repulsion — innate ability.
  • Static Storm — creates a static storm that deals damage and prevents all enemy units in the area from casting abilities. The damage increases over the spell’s duration; with Aghanim’s Scepter, enemies also cannot use items.

Looking at the kit as a whole, Disruptor is still all about controlling space. What I especially like is that he has both catch after a retreat and a hard zone the enemy simply can’t walk into. It’s the kind of hero where one good button can decide the fight before it even starts.

Changes in recent patches

I’d say the recent patches for Disruptor don’t turn the hero upside down, but they do carefully strengthen his core and make his build a bit more flexible.

  • 7.41f: base Intelligence increased from 20 to 21; level 1 damage increased from 47–51 to 48–52.
  • 7.41d: base movement speed increased from 295 to 300; Thunder Strike mana cost reduced from 125/130/135/140 to 115/120/125/130.
  • 7.41: Electromagnetic Repulsion also started dealing damage equal to the owner’s Intelligence * 1.5; Thunder Strike damage per hit increased from 25/55/85/115 to 30/60/90/120.
  • 7.41: the Aghanim’s Shard upgrade was removed from Thunder Strike.
  • 7.41: Kinetic Fence now grants Aghanim’s Shard; the ability no longer upgrades with Kinetic Field and has only one level.
  • 7.41: Kinetic Fence now has a cast range of 1200 instead of 1050, a cooldown of 14 seconds instead of 20/18/16/14, a duration of 4.4 seconds instead of 2.6/3.2/3.8/4.4, and the delay before creation was increased from 0.4 to 1 second.
  • 7.41: the level 15 talent increased the bonus distance / maximum damage bonus on Glimpse from 10%/300 to 15%/300.
  • 7.41: the level 20 talent was changed from “+150 radius/range for Electromagnetic Repulsion” to “+75 Static Storm radius”.
  • 7.41: the level 25 talent “+150 Static Storm radius” was replaced with “+6 Thunder Strike hits”; this also reduces the interval between hits by 50%.
  • 7.41: the level 25 talent “-12 sec. Glimpse cooldown” was replaced with “2 charges of Glimpse”.

To me, the most important thing here isn’t the individual numbers, but the fact that the hero is still being pushed toward a more active playstyle. He’s gotten a bit better on mana, a bit better in base stats, and noticeably more interesting with his late-game talents. That’s a good thing for a support who wants more than to exist for one ultimate.

Statistics

According to OpenDota, over the last 7 days Disruptor has had 335,057 games in public matches, with a 50.5% win rate. By that metric, the hero ranks 47th out of 127, and 50th by number of games.

  • Herald — 49.1%
  • Guardian — 49.0%
  • Crusader — 50.2%
  • Archon — 50.1%
  • Legend — 50.6%
  • Ancient — 50.9%
  • Divine — 51.4%

In professional matches over the latest OpenDota period, Disruptor has 27 picks, 13 wins, which is 48.1%, and 7 bans. By the numbers, he doesn’t look like a hero you build a draft around every time, but he definitely isn’t something to write off yet.

Items and matchups

Looking at items in professional matches, the picture is pretty much what you’d expect: Disruptor likes a fast start, then tools for positioning and control, and later on he wants fight impact and survivability.

  • Starting out: Iron Branch, Tango, Blood Grenade, Observer and Sentry Wards, Faerie Fire, Sentry Ward.
  • Early game: Boots of Speed, Arcane Boots, Tranquil Boots, Null Talisman, Bracer, Shadow Amulet.
  • Mid game: Arcane Boots, Blink Dagger, Glimmer Cape, Staff of Wizardry, Ghost Scepter, Pavise.
  • Late game: Aghanim’s Scepter, Blink Dagger, Glimmer Cape, Force Staff, Aeon Disk, Refresher Orb.

That says a lot: Blink Dagger and Force Staff work perfectly with his idea of forcing a fight on his terms, while Glimmer Cape and Aeon Disk help him stay alive long enough to press his buttons. I like this kind of build — no unnecessary romance, just practical stuff.

The matchups in professional games are interesting too.

  • Best against: Bloodseeker — 27 games, 66.7% win rate; Phantom Assassin — 73 games, 61.6%; Phantom Lancer — 56 games, 58.9%.
  • Worst against: Broodmother — 42 games, 33.3%; Enigma — 46 games, 34.8%; Kez — 161 games, 34.8%.

These numbers make Disruptor look like a hero who is especially strong when he can punish mobile or greedy heroes, but noticeably worse against opponents who can break the fight’s tempo themselves or take space before he does.

Conclusion

To me, Disruptor in 7.41f remains a very honest hero: he doesn’t do everything by himself, but he’s excellent at punishing mistakes and turning chaos into a fight that suits him. The recent buffs look subtle, but they point in the right direction — more lane comfort, a bit more damage, and a bit more reason to care about the late-game talents. I’d expect him to keep showing up in pubs as a reliable support for players who like to start fights and keep them under control.
